Venezuela, Sheinbaum: “The Americas do not belong to any power”

Turin, Jan. 5 (LaPresse) – “Mexico firmly believes that the Americas do not belong to any doctrine or power. The American continent belongs to the people of each of its countries.” This was stated by Mexican President Gloria Sheinbaum, who once again condemned the US intervention in Venezuela and the capture of ousted President Nicolas Maduro. “Mexico’s position on any form of intervention is firm, clear, and historic: Mexico reaffirms a principle that is neither new nor ambiguous: we categorically reject intervention in the internal affairs of other countries,” she said at a press conference in Mexico City, as reported by CNN. “Only the people can build their own future, decide their own path, exercise sovereignty over their natural resources, and freely define their form of government,” she remarked, emphasizing that “for Mexico—and as it should be for all Mexicans—the sovereignty and self-determination of peoples are neither optional nor negotiable.” Responding to accusations by US President Donald Trump that Mexico has not done enough to combat drug cartels, Sheinbaum reiterated: “Mexico cooperates with the United States, including for humanitarian reasons, to prevent fentanyl and other drugs from reaching its population, especially young people,” and “we do not want fentanyl or any other drug to reach young people, either in the United States, Mexico, or anywhere else in the world.”
