Bulgaria, President Radev announces his resignation

Sofia (Bulgaria), Jan. 19 (LaPresse) – Bulgarian President Rumen Radev has announced that he will resign. In a televised address, he said that on Tuesday he will formally submit his resignation to the Constitutional Court. “The battle for the future of our homeland awaits us, and I believe we will face it together with all of you. We are ready. We can, and we will succeed,” Radev said. According to the Constitution, the current Vice President, Iliana Yotova, will have to take the oath of office in parliament to assume the post until the end of the presidential term. Radev’s resignation, the first by a head of state in Bulgaria’s post-communist history, comes as the country struggles to overcome a prolonged political crisis. The major anti-corruption demonstrations last month led to the resignation of the governing coalition. Attempts to form a new government within the current parliament have failed, and the country is heading toward its eighth parliamentary election since 2021. Radev, whose second term expires in 2026, has repeatedly indicated that he may take part in new elections.
