Dubai (United Arab Emirates), 21 January (LaPresse/AP) – Iranian state television has released the first official death toll from the recent protests, stating that 3,117 people were killed in the demonstrations that began on 28 December. The figure is lower than that reported by activists, who put the death toll at 4,560. According to the state broadcaster, 2,427 of the total number of deaths were civilians and members of the security forces.
