Strasbourg (France), 21 January (LaPresse) – “We regret today’s vote in favour of requesting an opinion from the EU Court of Justice on the EU-Mercosur agreement. This vote is not good news, but we respect it and will await the Court of Justice’s decision before proceeding with the necessary parliamentary ratification. We recognise that the Council and the Commission now have the prerogatives for the provisional application of the agreement, in accordance with the Treaties.” This was stated in a note by the president of the S&D group in the European Parliament, Iratxe García Pérez. ‘We will continue to work to make the EU-Mercosur agreement a reality and to diversify trade links around the world with partners who share the same principles. The creation of the world’s largest trading bloc is the cornerstone of a rules-based multilateral order, offering economic benefits for both the people of the EU and Mercosur,’ she concluded.
