Iran, activists: ‘Over 5,000 dead in crackdown on protests’

Dubai (United Arab Emirates), 23 January. (LaPresse) – The death toll from the crackdown on anti-government protests across Iran has exceeded 5,000, and there are fears that the number could rise. This information comes from the US-based group Hrana, Human Rights Activists News Agency, which has proven to be accurate in previous waves of protests and uses a network of activists in the country to verify the number of deaths. According to Hrana, 5,002 people have been killed – 4,716 of whom were protesters and 203 were affiliated with the government – and 26,800 have been arrested. Hrana also reports that among the dead are 43 children and 40 civilians who were not participating in the protests.
