Ukraine, Kiev: ‘If Salvini cares about the peace agreement, he should turn to Putin’

Milan, 27 January (LaPresse) – “We will always be grateful for the support of Italy and all Italians who, unlike Matteo Salvini, understand that the fate of peace in Europe is being decided on the battlefield in Ukraine. To the Deputy Prime Minister, if he cares about a peace agreement, we advise him to turn not to the President of Ukraine – the country defending itself from aggression – but to Putin, who started this war.” This is what Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman Heorhii Tykhyi wrote in a post on social media, responding to Matteo Salvini, who on Sunday at an event organised by the Lega party in Rivisondoli (L’Aquila) said that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky should “choose between defeat and rout”. ‘Between 3,000 and 5,000 Ukrainians took part in the Battle of Montecassino, one of the bloodiest battles of the Second World War,’ Tykhyi added, “they did not choose “between defeat and rout”, even though victory sometimes seemed very far away. They fought side by side with the other allies because the freedom of Italy and the whole of Europe was at stake. As hard as Ukraine’s struggle is today, it is just as crucial as it was 80 years ago.”
