Ukraine: Russia attacks energy infrastructure, widespread blackouts

Rome, 7 February (LaPresse) – Russia carried out a massive attack on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure in the early hours of this morning, causing power outages in most regions. Attacks were reported across the country, including western Ukraine. In the early hours of the morning, the Ukrainian Air Force reported drone activity around 5:30 a.m., with drones sighted in the Lviv region, near the town of Khodoriv. Shortly afterwards, explosions were heard in Burshtyn, in the Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast. Lviv Oblast Governor Maksym Kozytskyi sounded the alarm about a ‘new threat’ to the region, saying that missiles had been detected near the neighbouring Ternopil Oblast. The Ukrainian Air Force also reported that missiles were heading towards the Lviv and Ivano-Frankivsk Oblasts. According to local media, emergency power cuts were also announced in the oblasts of Kyiv, Odessa and Dnipropetrovsk.
