Meta: EU ready to take measures to exclude other AI assistants on WhatsApp

Brussels, 9 February (LaPresse) – The European Commission has sent a notice to Meta stating that the US Big Tech company has violated EU antitrust rules by excluding third-party artificial intelligence (AI) assistants from accessing and interacting with users on WhatsApp. According to the European Executive, Meta’s conduct risks preventing competitors from entering or expanding in the rapidly growing market for artificial intelligence assistants. The Commission therefore intends to impose provisional measures ‘to prevent this policy change from causing serious and irreparable damage to the market,’ subject to Meta’s response and respect for its rights of defence. The notice, it is specified, concerns the European Economic Area, with the exception of Italy, where the Italian Competition and Market Authority imposed provisional measures on Meta in December 2025.
