Defense, Starmer: “Europe a sleeping giant, reduce dependence on the US”

Munich (Germany), 14 Feb. (LaPresse) – British Prime Minister Keir Starmer intends to support greater European defense independence at the Munich Security Conference. According to excerpts of his speech released in advance, he will describe Europe as a “sleeping giant” in many areas. He will emphasize the need to reduce dependence on the United States and to take on greater responsibilities within NATO. “I am talking about a vision of European security and greater European autonomy,” the speech text reads. This does not mean a “withdrawal” of the United States, but rather a better sharing of burdens within the alliance and a renewal of relations. The economic power of European countries is ten times greater than that of Russia. Europe also possesses “enormous defensive capabilities.” The British government announced Friday that it will invest over £400 million (almost €460 million) in hypersonic and long-range weapons this fiscal year. The funds will be used, among other things, for joint projects with Germany, France, and Italy.
