NATO, Kallas: “Rubio’s words reassuring but not sure they reflect Trump’s thinking”

Munich (Germany), Feb. 14 (LaPresse) – “I think Europeans breathed a sigh of relief because he said that Europe is important, that Europe and America are closely linked and good allies, and they have been for a long time and will continue to be in the future,” said Kaja Kallas, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, commenting on U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s speech at the Munich Security Conference. “I think it was good to hear and have this reassurance that the transatlantic ties are there. I believe the atmosphere in the room was completely different compared to last year,” Kallas added, referring to the 2025 Munich Conference speech by U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance, who had heavily criticized Europe at the time. Rubio “was clearly also addressing the American audience. But I think it is important to understand that most Americans see Europeans as allies. So this is definitely something we can build on. We want strong transatlantic ties,” Kallas said, emphasizing that “sometimes it felt like we were alone in this relationship.” Rubio’s messages “were reassuring. But we also know he is the most pro-European or most transatlantic in the administration. So it always remains a question whether he also represents President Trump’s views,” she concluded.
