Crans-Montana tragedy, fire chief: ‘It is not my job to inspect materials’

Milan, 18 February (LaPresse) – After being questioned by police on Monday, Crans-Montana fire chief David Vocat spoke to Swiss broadcaster RTS. Vocat was questioned in particular because he had participated in an inspection of the Le Constellation bar in 2018 but had not mentioned the sound-absorbing panels glued to the basement ceiling that caused the deadly fire on New Year’s Eve. ‘When I came to inspect this building, it was already a fire inspection. I am not responsible for inspecting materials,’ Vocat said, ‘that’s not my job at all. If it had been my job, I would have inspected it, I would have said so.’ ‘I train on all new technologies, but we’re talking about electric cars, solar panels, all kinds of things that are dangerous for rescuers, but not combustible materials inside buildings,’ he added.
