Rome, Mar. 1 (LaPresse) – “The EU and its member states are taking all necessary measures to ensure the safety of EU citizens in the region, including activating, if necessary, the EU civil protection mechanism. The ongoing events in Iran must not lead to an escalation that could threaten the Middle East, Europe and beyond, with unpredictable consequences, including economic ones.” This was stated by EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas on behalf of the European Union. “The EU reiterates its solidarity with the Iranian people and strongly supports their fundamental aspirations for a future in which their universal human rights and fundamental freedoms are fully respected.” “The attacks by Iran and the violation of the sovereignty of several countries in the region are unjustifiable. Iran must refrain from indiscriminate military attacks,” Kallas continued, calling for “maximum restraint, protection of civilians and full respect for international law, including the principles of the United Nations Charter and international humanitarian law.”
