EU, Renew leader: “Meloni does not have a privileged channel with Trump”

Brussels, Mar. 3 (LaPresse) – “From a European perspective regarding the Italian government, despite the public position of closeness to Washington, despite the narrative of privileged access, Giorgia Meloni was not informed in advance of the attacks on Iran. This exposes a political illusion, the idea that closeness to Donald Trump guarantees influence. It means that they do not have privileged channels. There is no privileged access. There is no restricted circle of European leaders, regardless of how they try to cultivate it. And this reality manifests itself in very concrete ways”. This was stated by the president of the Renew Europe group, Valérie Hayer, at a press conference with the Secretary of Azione, Carlo Calenda, and MEP Elisabetta Gualmini, at the European Parliament in Brussels. “Think about what happened with Greenland a few weeks ago, when I found out what was threatening our territorial integrity, going to Greenland, what was Giorgia Meloni’s reaction? The other leaders were very strong, in the sense that we must play hard with Donald Trump. And to be very clear, if we had followed Giorgia Meloni’s strategy, what would have happened? The strategy of appeasement is not a strategy. It does not work. We hope, fortunately, that the leaders have decided to be strong, to be firm”, she stressed.
