London (United Kingdom), Mar 11 (LaPresse) – The British government has begun releasing an initial set of documents concerning the appointment of Peter Mandelson as the United Kingdom’s ambassador to the United States. Mandelson has been removed from his post and is under police investigation for possible irregularities related to his ties with Jeffrey Epstein. The government says the documents show that Mandelson concealed from officials the true extent of his relationship with Epstein.
The documents are being released in stages following a review by Parliament’s Intelligence and Security Committee. Police have asked the government not to publish documents that could compromise the criminal investigation into Mandelson. Documents from the U.S. Department of Justice published in January suggest that Mandelson may have shared sensitive government information with markets through Epstein.
Mandelson, a prominent figure in the governing Labour Party, was arrested on February 23 at his London home and was released without bail conditions. The former ambassador has denied any wrongdoing and has not been charged.
