Iran: Revolutionary Guards confirm death of Soleimani, head of Basij forces

Turin, 17 March (LaPresse) – Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has confirmed the death of Basij forces commander Gholamreza Soleimani. In a statement released by the semi-official Iranian news agency Tasnim, the Pasdaran stated that Soleimani was killed in an ‘attack by the American-Zionist enemy’. Soleimani, who led the Basij forces for the past six years and oversaw internal security operations, “played a strategic and unprecedented role in modernising the popular and jihadist structure of the Basij forces, in developing constructive movements, in eliminating deprivation and in providing assistance to oppressed and vulnerable groups”, the statement read.
