Milan, 15 April (LaPresse) – The Pentagon is set to send thousands more troops to the Middle East, as the Trump administration seeks to ramp up pressure on Iran to push it towards an agreement that could bring an end to the conflict. This is reported by the Washington Post (WP), citing US officials. According to the newspaper, around 6,000 troops will be deployed to the region aboard the aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush, accompanied by several warships, and by the end of the month a further 4,200 troops from the Boxer Amphibious Ready Group and its Marine Corps task force, the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit, are expected to arrive. The Washington Post notes that “the firepower appears set to join the warships already in the Middle East just as the two-week ceasefire is due to expire on 22 April”. The troops will join the approximately 50,000 personnel who, according to the Pentagon, are involved in operations against Iran.
