Ukraine, Merz: “EU accession not in the immediate future, intermediate steps needed”

Brussels, Apr. 24 (LaPresse) – “We have discussed the possibility of Ukraine joining the European Union” and “this will not happen in the immediate future. I propose to start a process within the European Union with a strategy to bring Ukraine closer to the Union, at the end of which there should be the possibility of full membership. But we need intermediate steps.” This was stated by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz at a press conference at the end of the informal summit in Nicosia, Cyprus. “In recent days,” he added, “I have had the opportunity to discuss this several times with President Zelensky. We would like to see Ukraine more directly involved in EU institutions, participating in the European Councils, the European Parliament or the Commission without voting rights, or involving it progressively in policy areas depending on the degree of progress made. We hope to be able to accelerate this process and facilitate Ukraine’s possible accession.”
