Milan, 25 May (LaPresse) – A lorry carrying steel bars and passengers overturned early on Monday morning on a major motorway in central Bangladesh, killing at least 15 people and injuring 10, according to police reports. The accident occurred at around 5 am when the driver lost control of the vehicle in the Soratoil area, in the Tangail district, 83 km north-west of the capital Dhaka, said local police chief Fuad Hossain. Hossain explained that the lorry was carrying hitchhikers and was travelling from Dhaka towards the northern region, as people had begun travelling ahead of the Islamic festival of Eid al-Adha, which falls on Thursday. The lorry overturned, killing everyone instantly. The official added that most of the passengers were farm labourers travelling to their families for the holiday. Eyewitnesses told television stations that they had rushed to the scene after hearing the crash and had begun to rescue the trapped passengers. Every year, in this country of over 170 million people, thousands die as a result of road accidents, poor enforcement of traffic regulations, poor road conditions and inexperienced driving.
