Rome, May 31 (LaPresse) – The Israeli army has announced that its forces are advancing further in southern Lebanon. In recent days, as reported by The Times of Israel, a ground operation in Lebanon had already been announced in the Beaufort Ridge area and the Wadi Saluki stream, “to destroy infrastructure [of Hezbollah] and eliminate terrorists, as part of strengthening operational control in southern Lebanon and removing the direct threat to the Galilee and Metula,” as well as to “extend the forward defense line.” Soldiers crossed the 90-degree bend of the Litani River, directly opposite the border town of Metula, and advanced toward the castle overlooking the Galilee in northern Israel, as well as the Nabatieh area in southern Lebanon. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) say they have extended their strikes to areas north of the Litani River and that the operation is “expanding to additional areas.” The Beaufort and Wadi Saluki area hosts “significant” Hezbollah infrastructure, which according to the IDF was built with Iranian assistance, “from which Hezbollah terrorists managed combat operations and carried out numerous terrorist attacks.” According to the army, hundreds of rockets were launched from the area toward Israel and troops in southern Lebanon. The IDF is operating near Nabatieh, a major Hezbollah stronghold in southern Lebanon, and is ready to expand the offensive if necessary, the armed forces say. Prior to the ground offensive, the Israeli Air Force carried out “massive” strikes against Hezbollah infrastructure in the area. Artillery and tank fire were also conducted. The Israel Defense Forces also say they struck “strategic positions, searched for and neutralized military infrastructure in the Litani area, and carried out essential engineering activities to create the necessary conditions for the offensive operation.”
