Rome, 1 June (LaPresse) – The United States is reported to have given Israel the green light to expand its operations towards Beirut. This is according to Israeli media, citing US sources. According to the Israeli channel “i24News”, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is said to have attempted, in his talks with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, to promote an agreement under which Hezbollah would cease its attacks in exchange for Israel refraining from intensifying hostilities in Beirut. Aoun – it is explained – reportedly sought to take the proposal forward, but the Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament, Nabih Berri, is said to have responded in an ‘evasive’ manner, asking Israel to cease fire first.
