Rome, June 2 (LaPresse) – “The European Council condemns the mistreatment of detainees following the interception of the Global Solidarity Flotilla in international waters. It calls on the Council to continue its work on restrictive measures against extremist ministers who incite and promote such human rights violations.” This is stated in the first draft, dated June 1, of the conclusions of the EU Summit on June 18 and 19. The document also takes a stance regarding “Israel’s unilateral actions in the West Bank.” The Council, it states, “reiterates its condemnation” and “urges the Government of Israel to halt the expansion of settlements, including in the E1 area, which are illegal under international law, to respect its obligations under international law, and to protect the Palestinian population of the occupied territories, including Christian communities and other minorities, as well as to ensure the preservation and respect of the status quo of the holy sites in Jerusalem.” “The European Council,” the statement reads, “condemns the ongoing and escalating violence by settlers against Palestinian civilians, calls for justice to be served, and welcomes the adoption of restrictive measures against extremist settlers and entities and organizations that support settler violence against Palestinian civilians. It also welcomes the adoption of further restrictive measures against Hamas. The European Council condemns Israel’s adoption of the discriminatory death penalty law and calls for its immediate repeal.”
