Turin, 5 June (LaPresse) – During the war with Iran, Israel secretly deployed elite military and intelligence units to Azerbaijan, as part of a network of clandestine sites across the Middle East, to facilitate operations against Tehran. This is reported by CNN, citing four sources with knowledge of the matter. According to two sources, the forces operated from various locations in southern Azerbaijan, adjacent to the northern border with Iran and, at the closest point, just around 96 kilometres from the Iranian city of Tabriz, which Israel had struck during the war. According to the other two sources, special commando units were deployed in the area and carried out intelligence-gathering missions and drone operations, providing Israel with a strategic vantage point from which to monitor northern Iran during the war. According to one of the sources, the operation in Azerbaijan involved several dozen soldiers, including members of the Israeli special forces, elite helicopter rescue and relief forces, and Mossad personnel. “We firmly reject the baseless allegations regarding the alleged use of Azerbaijani territory for operations against third countries,” a spokesperson for the Azerbaijani embassy in the United States told CNN.
