Brussels, June 17 (LaPresse) – The European Commission is supporting the response to Ebola with €493 million in emergency aid, vaccines, treatments and health security, following a request from G7 leaders for a coordinated response to the outbreak. The amount includes frontline medical support for the immediate response to the epidemic, humanitarian assistance in the Great Lakes region and Uganda, research into vaccines and treatments for filoviruses, and long-term interventions to improve preparedness and health systems. The Commission’s response to the outbreak has been coordinated from day one with Member States, international bodies and partners. Safeguarding public health is the Commission’s top priority. “This reminds us that health security is shared security. Countries can better protect their citizens by acting together. Europe is choosing strengthened preparedness and collective action based on solid evidence. Global solidarity is the only option when the world faces a common threat,” said European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
