London (United Kingdom), 22 June (LaPresse) – The former mayor of Manchester, Andy Burnham, has announced his candidacy for the Labour leadership and, consequently, the post of Prime Minister, following Keir Starmer’s resignation this morning. “Keir has rendered an immense service to our country and I would like to thank him for his leadership and dedication during such a difficult period,” he said. His decision to resign “marks the start of a transition and it is important that this process takes place in an orderly and responsible manner. I will stand as a candidate as part of this process,” he said. “The country expects stability, seriousness and a continued focus on the most important issues, and that is what it will get,” he added. Burnham emphasised that “people want to see progress on economic growth, the cost of living, public services, housing and opportunities for the next generation. Political change should never distract from the responsibility to improve people’s lives.”
