Madrid (Spain), June 24 (LaPresse) – While Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez was addressing the Congress of Deputies on corruption cases involving current and former members of his party, the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party, the People’s Party succeeded in securing Senate approval for a motion calling for early elections. However, the motion was supported only by Vox and the Navarrese party Union of the People of Navarre. The Catalan pro-independence party Junts per Catalunya abstained from voting, while the Basque Nationalist Party voted against it. The outcome is seen as an important signal for the People’s Party, which would need to win the support of either Junts or the PNV in order to pass a motion of no confidence capable of bringing down Sánchez’s government. The motion, introduced in the upper house where the People’s Party holds a majority, is not binding on the Spanish prime minister.
