Rome, 26 June (LaPresse) – “The European Union and its Member States have the sovereign right to regulate economic activities within their own territories, in accordance with our democratic values and the international commitments we have undertaken. Any tax is, by its very nature, non-discriminatory and applies equally to all large companies, regardless of their origin.” This was stated by a spokesperson for the European Commission following Donald Trump’s threats to impose 100 per cent tariffs should the Digital Tax be introduced for US companies. “Unilateral measures targeting such legitimate policies are unjustified. Should they be adopted, the European Union will respond swiftly and decisively to defend its rights and regulatory autonomy,” the spokesperson added. “The European Union has consistently advocated a global solution for the fair taxation of the digital economy, in line with the conclusions of the G7 finance ministers. This remains our preferred course of action, and we are ready to engage constructively to achieve this objective,” he concluded.
