Milan, 6 July (LaPresse) – Former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was spotted attending Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s funeral procession in Tehran. The BBC reports this, citing local media. This marks Ahmadinejad’s first public appearance since the start of the war on 28 February. According to Iranian media reports, the area near Ahmadinejad’s home was targeted in the early days of the war between the United States, Israel and Iran, and a government-owned newspaper subsequently reported that three of Ahmadinejad’s bodyguards had been killed in the attack. Ahmadinejad served as president from 2005 to 2013. His controversial re-election in 2009 sparked major protests, but was backed by Khamenei. The former Supreme Leader subsequently warned Ahmadinejad not to stand for re-election in 2017, but he did so anyway and was barred from the race – a situation that was repeated in 2021 and 2024.
