Iran – according to senior U.S. officials speaking to CBS News – said that those who opened fire on the vessels in order to undermine the negotiations were a group of “misguided” extremists. “The Iranians – the U.S. source noted – returned to the negotiating table and said they were wrong: ‘We made a mistake. Now we continue to talk’.” According to the officials, the recent Iranian attacks on commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz would also be attributable to an internal power struggle within the Tehran regime. The officials said that U.S. negotiators are making progress in talks with Iranian leaders. However, they reported the presence in Iran of hardliners seeking to undermine the ceasefire and who contributed to triggering a new wave of attacks in the strait.
