Turin, 13 July (LaPresse) – The European Commission has appointed Executive Vice-President Raffaele Fitto as the Commission’s Special Representative for Cyprus. This is according to a press release. “In this capacity,” the statement explains, Mr Fitto “will contribute to the dispute settlement process within the framework of the United Nations, working closely with the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for Cyprus, María Ángela Holguin Cuellar”. “This appointment reflects the Commission’s firm commitment to the reunification of Cyprus, with the aim of achieving a comprehensive, functional and viable solution, in accordance with the relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions and in line with the principles, values and legislation of the European Union,” the press release continues. “Executive Vice-President Fitto will work with all stakeholders and interlocutors to pave the way for the resumption of negotiations and to support a comprehensive and sustainable solution, in particular by fostering a climate of trust amongst all stakeholders and interlocutors. “Executive Vice-President Fitto,” the statement concludes, “will draw on his many years of experience in European governance, regional cooperation and institutional dialogue. This experience will support the Commission’s efforts to facilitate progress towards a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus issue.”
