Bangkok (Thailand), 14 July (LaPresse/AP) – The death toll from the serious fire that broke out in a Bangkok bar has risen to 30. More than 70 people were injured, 24 of whom remain in critical condition. This was announced by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration. The fire at the ‘Rong Beer Na Ladprao’ bar, the worst in the city in the last 17 years, broke out on Sunday evening. It took the fire brigade half an hour to bring the flames under control. The bar, which is described in Thai as a beer hall and is located in the northern part of the Thai capital, claimed to be able to accommodate up to 600 customers. It is unclear how many people were present on Sunday evening. An investigation is underway into the causes of the fire and whether the venue complied with safety regulations. Most of the victims were found trapped in windowless toilets, where they had probably sought refuge from the flames, police reported. The Governor of Bangkok, Chadchart Sittipunt, said he had ordered the city council to carry out a thorough investigation into such venues to assess the risks. The city will also step up enforcement of existing laws to improve safety standards, he added.
