Rome, 20 July (LaPresse) – The United States has launched attacks against Iran for the ninth consecutive night, and Iranian media have reported explosions in several cities, including Sirik, Jask, Tabriz and Chabahar. Monday’s attacks came as the US military announced the death of a third soldier in recent days and as the ceasefire agreement, in place for a month between Tehran and Washington, crumbled amid the struggle for control of the Strait of Hormuz. In a statement, the US military said the latest attacks were aimed at “weakening Iranian military capabilities used to attack commercial vessels and seafarers transiting the Strait of Hormuz”. “Centcom assets have targeted Iranian military command centres, air defence and coastal surveillance sites, maritime capabilities, missile and drone launch sites, and communications networks, with the aim of further reducing Iran’s ability to attack commercial vessels and civilian seafarers transiting the Strait of Hormuz,” reads a post on the US social media platform X. “The US armed forces are holding Iran to account for its actions, on the orders of the Commander-in-Chief. CENTCOM forces remain extremely vigilant, focused, lethal and ready,” it added. The Iranian state broadcaster IRIB reported hearing several explosions in the port cities of Mahshahr and Imam Khomeini, in the south-western province of Khuzestan. It also reported further explosions near the towns of Sirik and Jask, in Hormozgan province on Iran’s southern coast, and near the town of Khvormuj, in Bushehr province. According to the semi-official Fars news agency, three explosions were also heard near the city of Tabriz, in north-western Iran, whilst air defences were activated in the south-eastern cities of Konarak and Chabahar, in the province of Sistan and Baluchistan. The Iranian side is also referring to retaliatory attacks, and Iranian media are reporting a new wave of missiles launched from Lorestan province, targeting US military objectives across the region.
