Rome, 20 July (LaPresse) – US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has stated that Iran is using the Strait of Hormuz as leverage in the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, adding that other countries must step up pressure to protect global shipping. “It is clear that Iran, or at least a section of the Iranian population, wants to control the strait and use it as leverage against the rest of the world,” Rubio told reporters before travelling to the Philippines for a meeting of foreign ministers of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. “The United States will do, and will continue to do, whatever is necessary to protect global maritime transport, but other countries must start stepping up and providing – whether it be assets or financial resources – to help shoulder this burden,” he added.
