Turin, 27 July (LaPresse/AP) – French President Emmanuel Macron is chairing a meeting this morning of the interministerial crisis unit on the widespread wildfires that have forced over 250,000 people to flee their homes, amid hopes that the spread of the largest blaze may be slowing. In a post published at the weekend on X, he promised long-term support for the communities affected by the fires. “We will rebuild, we will repair, and we will be there for as long as necessary,” he wrote. In the Gironde region of south-western France, where the flames have ravaged an area four times the size of Paris, the prefecture stated that the situation overnight remained “generally stable” – a change from previous days when the massive fire, which has been raging since last week, had closed in on the wine-producing city of Bordeaux. No new evacuations have been announced. However, with France about to enter the peak of the August tourist season, the authorities in Gironde have taken further measures to keep tourists away, banning summer camps for children and people with disabilities.
