Rome, Aug. 1 (LaPresse) – Italy and Denmark have promoted a letter to EU leaders “regarding the recent developments at the European Union’s external border in Ceuta and the need to prevent uncontrolled irregular crossings, combat migrant smuggling networks, eliminate any factors that could encourage new illegal arrivals, and ensure a united and effective European response.” The letter, addressed to the President of the European Council, António Costa, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and the rotating President of the Council of the European Union, Micheál Martin, was signed by 22 European heads of state and government. It calls on the Irish presidency to urgently convene an extraordinary videoconference of EU interior ministers for a joint assessment of the situation and the definition of a coordinated European response. Spain and France are not among the signatories.
