Rome, 1 August (LaPresse) – Elite Expeditions has confirmed via a social media post the death of the renowned mountaineer Nirmal Purja following an avalanche on Broad Peak in Pakistan. Nine other members of the expedition also lost their lives alongside him. Purja, a mountaineer of Nepalese origin, was known for having climbed the world’s 14 highest peaks in just over six months in 2019. Purja – as reported by the Kathmandu Post – was born on 25 July 1983 in the village of Dana. The climber, also known as Nims Dai, came from a family with a long tradition of military service: his father and three older brothers had all served in Nepal’s Gurkha regiments.
