Madrid (Spain), 3 Aug. (LaPresse) – The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has replied to the letter sent to her on Saturday by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, following the crisis in Ceuta. In the letter, to which El País had access, von der Leyen congratulated the governments of Spain and Morocco for having managed the crisis in the autonomous city “efficiently and effectively” and for having “successfully prevented illegal crossings to mainland Spain and Europe”. She then clarified that she had drawn an initial conclusion from last week’s events. “Following this incident, it is clear that we need to further strengthen our borders at critical points,” she emphasised. Von der Leyen went on to state that “Spain and its people can count on the continued support of the Commission and the rest of the Union to overcome this challenge”.
