(LaPresse) – “I ask that the additional controls” introduced by Italy for travelers from Spain be lifted immediately. “Everyone at the meeting” of EU ministers “recognized that there was no danger to the Schengen area” resulting from the Ceuta crisis. “Now we’ll see what happens and whether the Italian government will reconsider the situation.” Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska said this at a press conference, responding to LaPresse regarding Italy’s suspension of the Schengen Agreement with Spain. Marlaska said he initially didn’t understand why Rome had introduced these internal controls for travelers arriving from Spain by ship and plane. “I didn’t understand this for various reasons, because Spain never introduced controls and also because there was no risk of secondary movements given that Ceuta has a special regime and no one leaves there without going through controls,” the Spanish minister clarified, later stating that Spain “receives secondary movements coming from the east” and that despite this, it does not introduce internal border controls.
