El-Sayed defeated MP Haley Stevens, who was backed by the party establishment. In November, El-Sayed will face Republican Mike Rogers. The seat is crucial to the Democrats’ hopes of winning a majority in the Senate. Donald Trump described El-Sayed’s victory as “great news for the Republican Party”, calling him “a loser of a communist who hates Jews and Israel”. Now, Trump claimed, “the Democrats’ crazy policies can only get worse!” A former public health official, El-Sayed based his campaign on proposals such as “Medicare for All” (universal healthcare), an end to military aid to Israel and reform of political funding. During his campaign, he enjoyed the support of progressive leaders such as Senator Bernie Sanders and MP Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. The race remained too close to call throughout Tuesday night, with no winner declared until the early hours of Wednesday.
