(LaPresse) – An earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale has struck the province of Davao Occidental in the southern Philippines, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs). The earthquake, of tectonic origin, occurred at 12.14 local time, with its epicentre 37 kilometres south-west of Balut Island and its hypocentre at a depth of 13 kilometres. The tremor was felt at intensity 5 in Glan, in the province of Sarangani. Lower intensities were recorded in many other parts of the country. “Based on the available data, there is no threat of a destructive tsunami,” the institute stated, adding that no significant damage is expected as a result of the earthquake, whilst warning that aftershocks could occur in the coming hours.
