Islamabad (Pakistan), 6 Aug. (LaPresse) – Pakistani military helicopters have recovered the body of the renowned British-Nepalese mountaineer Nirmal Purja and those of four other climbers from the snow-covered slopes of Broad Peak, almost a week after an avalanche swept away the 10-strong international expedition. Irfan Arshad Khan, president of the Alpine Club of Pakistan, said that the remains of the mountaineers who died in the 31 July avalanche had been transferred to a military hospital in the northern town of Skardu. Three bodies had already been recovered from the mountain on 1 August. Today’s aerial operation has thus brought the total number of victims recovered to eight. Two climbers are still missing and the search continues following what the Alpine Club has described as one of the worst mountaineering tragedies in Pakistan’s history.
