(LaPresse/AP) – At least 2,000 people have died from Ebola in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, according to the latest figures released by the government. This is the fastest-spreading outbreak ever recorded. The figures, published overnight between Monday and Tuesday, show that there are 4,381 confirmed cases, including 2,011 deaths, whilst 704 infected people are hospitalised and in isolation. The Ebola outbreak, declared on 15 May, differs from most previous ones in that no vaccines have been developed against the rare Bundibugyo virus, which is responsible for the infection, nor are there any approved treatments. The World Health Organisation stated on Monday that the outbreak began in February, long before the authorities identified it in one of the most remote and vulnerable areas of the Congo.
