(LaPresse/AP) – Luigi Mangione has pleaded guilty to federal stalking charges relating to the murder of UnitedHealthcare’s chief executive, Brian Thompson, and has admitted to shooting Thompson after following him to the investors’ conference. “On the morning of 4 December 2024, I shot Mr Thompson in Manhattan and he died,” said Mangione. In court, he stated that he had sent an email to UnitedHealthcare, “posing as an investor in a firm managing over 50 million dollars in assets, and had asked for information about the conference”. Mangione entered his guilty plea during an emergency hearing at the federal court in Manhattan. On 8 September, Mangione is due to face a further trial on state murder charges and, following his guilty plea in federal court, his lawyers may seek to have the state case dismissed under the principle of ne bis in idem. According to the authorities’ account, Mangione allegedly followed Thompson, aged 50, and then shot him outside a New York hotel on 4 December 2024, whilst the executive was walking to UnitedHealth Group’s annual investors’ conference. As Mangione described how he had shot Thompson, the latter’s wife wiped her eyes with a white handkerchief and wept.
