Rome, 16 Aug. (LaPresse) – The Barcelona police are investigating the assault that has left Nicola Maggiotto, 21, from Asolo in the Treviso area, fighting for his life; he is currently in intensive care at a hospital in the Catalan city and is being kept in a medically induced coma. Detectives are trying to piece together what happened during the night between Wednesday and Thursday, outside a bar. After 10 pm, the group was reportedly approached by a number of young Spaniards. The attack is believed to have started at that point, but the exact sequence of events has not yet been fully established. Maggiotto has suffered extremely serious injuries, and a friend of his who tried to defend him was injured in the cheekbone. The Spanish authorities are investigating the case. The file will also be forwarded to the Public Prosecutor’s Office in Rome, which has jurisdiction over serious crimes committed abroad against Italian citizens. As soon as the report was received, consular assistance was activated to ensure support for the young man and his family. Investigators will now have to establish who attacked the 21-year-old, for what reasons and under what circumstances, by examining any witness statements and footage that may help reconstruct the sequence of events. According to informed sources, the 21-year-old Italian is in hospital in Barcelona in a serious condition, in a medically induced coma to prevent further damage. The young man’s father has travelled to the Catalan city to monitor developments.
