Brazil: head-on collision between minibus and truck leaves 23 dead

São Paulo (Brazil), Aug. 19 (LaPresse/AP) — A minibus and a truck collided head-on in the southern Brazilian state of Paraná, killing at least 23 people and injuring five others. Initial reports indicate that the truck, which was not carrying any cargo, veered into the oncoming lane and collided with the minibus around 3:30 a.m. (8:30 a.m. in Italy), according to the Brazilian highway patrol. The accident occurred on a highway near Ipiranga, a town of 14,000 residents located in the central part of the state of Paraná, 560 kilometers south of São Paulo. Among the minibus passengers were healthcare workers, patients, and some family members. The death toll includes 21 adults and two children. Footage broadcast by TV Globo shows the truck parked on the grassy shoulder of the road and the wrecked minibus, with shattered windows and the passengers’ personal belongings scattered on the ground.
