Rome, Aug. 20 (LaPresse) – “A naval drone was destroyed by the Romanian military using the onboard cannon of an F-16 fighter jet a short while ago, in the area of the Neptun Deep platform, in the Black Sea.” Romanian Defense Minister Radu Miruta announced this on Facebook. “During the morning, we were informed by the Coast Guard of the presence of a naval drone a few hundred meters from the gas extraction activities at the Neptun Deep platform, in the exclusive economic zone, 80 miles east of Constanta,” Miruta explained. “A command cell was established at the Romanian Defense Ministry, which asked NATO to assume command at the Romanian military level. At the end of the analyses and in coordination with the president of Romania, in order to protect the lives of the several hundred people working on the platform and secure critical infrastructure, the decision was made to destroy the drone,” the minister added, stressing that “the drone was safely destroyed” and that “through the direct communication channel recently established with the Ukrainian side, we received official confirmation that the drone was not of Ukrainian origin.”
