There are now fears that, after hours of heavy rain, the lake formed among the debris could overflow and cause further flooding in the coming days. According to Chinese state media cited by the BBC, rescuers in the area have been ordered to suspend operations for the time being. More than 550 people are reported missing on the Tibetan side of the border, including 260 foreigners, among them pilgrims heading to the sacred Mount Kailash in Tibet.
