Milan, Aug. 28 (LaPresse) – General Ratko Mladic, who died yesterday in The Hague, will be buried with the highest state and military honors. Serbian Justice Minister Nenad Vujic announced this, adding that the burial place will be decided by Mladic’s family. Serbian radio and television reported this, citing statements made by the minister to K1 TV. Vujic said he would send a letter to The Hague expressing hope that not only the cause of Mladic’s death would be established, but also whether he had received adequate medical care. The minister said he would receive further information today on the date when Mladic’s body will be transferred to Serbia and specified that everything depends on the bureaucratic procedures of the Hague Mechanism. “It is up to them alone to decide,” he said, referring to the family that will decide the burial place, adding that “it is certain that General Mladic will be accorded all the military and state honors due to him when he is laid to rest.” Mladic, the notorious Bosnian Serb general, is known as the ‘Butcher of Srebrenica’ or ‘Executioner of Srebrenica’: he commanded the forces responsible for the 1995 Srebrenica massacre, in which more than 8,000 Muslim men and boys were killed, the first genocide in Europe since World War II. In 2017, he was sentenced to life imprisonment by the UN tribunal for war crimes committed during the conflicts in the former Yugoslavia in the 1990s; he had been in custody since 2011, after many years on the run.
