Valletta (Malta), Sept. 2 (LaPresse/AP) — A Maltese jury has acquitted businessman Yorgen Fenech, who was accused of masterminding the murder of investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, who was killed in a car bombing in 2017. Fenech, indicted in 2021 on charges of conspiracy and criminal association, was accused of ordering and financing the assassination. He had pleaded not guilty. The jury acquitted him on both counts. Caruana Galizia’s murder shocked Europe and sparked protests that led to the downfall of the then-Maltese prime minister.
