(LaPresse) – The US Navy has escorted 40 commercial vessels, carrying a total of 18 million barrels of oil, through the Strait of Hormuz, in what is the largest operation of its kind since the start of the war between the US and Iran. This was reported by CNN, citing two US officials with knowledge of the operations. Before the conflict began, just over six months ago, around 20 million barrels of oil passed through the Strait each day. According to the officials, during the escort operations, US forces deployed various air, naval and space assets to continue to target Iran’s ability to attack commercial vessels in the Strait and, at the same time, repel waves of drone attacks. The escort operations, described as risky by officials quoted by CNN, enabled ships carrying millions of barrels of oil to pass through. US forces also neutralised anti-ship cruise missiles during the escort operation, one of the two officials reported.
