May their souls rest in peace,” wrote the NGO’s founder, Helena Maleno, on social media. The Spanish maritime rescue service stated that it had intervened to rescue 44 people on board the vessel, all men of sub-Saharan origin. “Five bodies” remained on board the boat, which “could not be recovered due to adverse weather conditions in the area”, it said.
